Fuel for America, A Resource for the Community
As Virginia and the nation explore energy options for the future, Virginia Uranium will remain a committed member of the entire Southside community, listening and responding to the issues of importance to our neighbors. Our commitment and support for an independent scientific study authorized by the Commonwealth of Virginia to determine if uranium mining can be done safely is just one example of this commitment. Until the study is complete and a regulatory framework is established, no mining will take place. In the meantime, we will work to provide regular updates and participate in community forums to share information about developments at the Coles Hill site. We welcome feedback from community members through our contact page.

Protecting Virginia's Natural Resources
We are fully committed to leaving the land, water and other natural resources in as good or better condition than they are today. Designated disturbed areas will be remediated and placed in appropriate conservation easements.

To ensure sustainable benefits to the land, we have pledged to:

  • Place the property into conservation easements for agricultural use once mining and reclamation is complete
  • Create a trust to fund conservation as well as support a mining severence tax benefiting conservation efforts for all of Southside Virginia
  • Diligently monitor and allow for community review to protect the air, land and water, and
  • Obtain surety bonds to ensure funds for land reclamation

Perpetuating Virginia's Agricultural Traditions
We are committed to blending our activities with the existing agricultural activities to continue the environmental harmony that exists in our community and the Commonwealth. A significant portion of Pittsylvania County's land is dedicated to agriculture and timber and these agricultural traditions have historically been a significant source of revenue for the area. Unfortunately, over the last decade the agricultural land acreage and revenue have been declining.

Our operations in the Commonwealth will contribute to efforts to preserve the integrity and traditions of Virginia agriculture. We will:

  • Support an independent study authorized by the Commonwealth of Virginia to analyze the effect of mining on the community with emphasis on agriculture
  • Actively work with the Virginia Farm Bureau to assist the county's efforts to preserve the agricultural traditions of the region, and
  • Support local and regional colleges and universities with research, scholarships, grants and job opportunities related to agriculture, mining and geology

Preserving the County’s Unique History
Mining in Virginia offers considerable resources to preserve and protect our historical heritage. Virginia Uranium will work with the Pittsylvania County Historical Society, Board of Supervisors, Chamber of Commerce and other groups to assist in the:

  • Restoration of historic buildings in Pittsylvania County
  • Maintenance and improvement of all Pittsylvania County sites on the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register
  • Development of educational programs to promote the region’s historical significance

Since its founding in 1767, Pittsylvania County has amassed a rich cultural and architectural history. The local tradition has provided positive economic impact. In fact, according to the 2006 Virginia Tourism Commission impact report, domestic travel to Southside Virginia generated $39.1 million in revenue. Virginia Uranium has committed to preserve historic sites and enhance neighboring community assets to help sustain local tourism.
