Energy Benefits of Uranium
Uranium ore can be processed into fuel to help meet the ever-increasing U.S. demand for electricity through nuclear power without the emission of greenhouse gases associated with climate change.
According to the American Nuclear Society, the energy potential of one uranium fuel pellet (which is about the size of the tip of your little finger) is the equivalent of 149 gallons of oil, 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas and one ton of coal. (See graphic below.)
Uranium-fueled power plants in the United States currently provide about 20 percent of the nation’s electricity. As uranium ore from new deposits such as Coles Hill is mined, milled and processed into fuel, the nation’s reliance on foreign sources of energy can be reduced — and oil can be reserved for use in transportation and in times of peak electricity demand.
